Drywood or Subterranean? Getting the Right Termite Diagnosis on Marco Island

Getting termite treatment in Marco Island right starts with one question: which termite is in your home? Marco Island is a city and barrier island in Collier County, about 20 miles south of Naples on the Gulf Coast. Termites that live inside dry wood behave very differently from termites that come up from the soil. The right treatment depends on which one you have.

That is why every On Demand Pest Control job starts with a free inspection. Our inspector looks for signs of activity, identifies the likely termite type, and gives you written options. We offer seven separate termite services. None of them is a one-size-fits-all plan, and your home only gets the services that match what the inspector finds.

You might notice small piles of pellets near a windowsill. You might find winged insects near a light, or mud tubes along a foundation wall. Each of those signs points to a different termite group. Our approach to termite treatment is to confirm the species first and then choose a matching method: a drywood bond, spot treatment, whole-house fumigation, a subterranean baiting system, or Formosan liquid treatment. You get a written quote before any work begins, so you can compare options on your own schedule.

Marco Island is served from our West Coast branch in Naples, which covers Collier and Lee counties.

Common Signs of Drywood and Subterranean Termites

Knowing the signs helps you explain what you’ve seen when you call, and it helps the inspector narrow things down.

  • Pellets (frass): drywood termites push small, dry pellets out of the wood they feed in. The pellets often gather in small piles below the damaged spot.
  • Discarded wings: after a swarm, termites shed their wings. You may find wings near windows, doors, or light fixtures.
  • Mud tubes: subterranean termites, including Formosan termites, build earthen tubes to travel between the soil and wood.
  • Damaged or hollow-sounding wood: trim, framing, or furniture that sounds hollow or crumbles when pressed can point to feeding inside.

A sign on its own doesn’t confirm the species or show how far the activity has spread. The inspection does that.

When Do Termites Swarm in Southwest Florida? A Species-by-Species Calendar

Swarms are the most visible termite event. They happen when a mature colony sends out winged reproductives, called alates, to start new colonies. Research from the University of Florida’s IFAS extension shows that swarm timing varies by species. There is no single “termite season” for a Gulf Coast home like yours on Marco Island.

Here is what UF/IFAS reports for the main groups in Florida:

  • Formosan subterranean termites: swarms typically run from early April through late June, shortly after sunset, and peak in May. A single flight can include tens of thousands of insects. When a structure is infested, the swarm can happen indoors.
  • West Indian drywood termites: mating flights run from April through June, but flights can happen at any time of year. The colony lives entirely inside wood and gets its moisture from that wood, with no contact with soil. A colony does not produce swarmers until it is about five years old.
  • Native subterranean termites (Reticulitermes): the three Florida species swarm on different calendars. R. hageni flies from early December into early February, in the evening. R. flavipes flies from early January through April. R. virginicus flies from early February through late May. The last two usually fly on warm, sunny, windless early afternoons, often after rain.

These calendars describe species biology across Florida. They are not counts of local cases. Winged insects near a Marco Island window in May could be Formosan termites, West Indian drywood termites, or the native subterranean species R. virginicus, because all three windows include May. A winter flight falls inside the native subterranean windows, though West Indian drywood termite flights can happen at any time of year. An inspection tells you which one you’re dealing with, and that decides which treatment fits.

How Termite Treatment Works for Marco Island Homes

Our termite process has one goal: find the termite type, then match it to a service built for that species. We don’t use the same routine for every house.

  1. Free inspection.

Your inspector looks over accessible areas of the home for signs of termite activity.

  2. Identify the termite type.

Drywood, native subterranean, and Formosan termites each call for different methods. A baiting system does not treat drywood termites, and tenting is not the answer for native subterranean termites.

  3. Written options and quote.

You get the services that fit your findings, chosen from our seven termite offerings. The quote names the recommended method and its scope.

  4. Preparation review.

Each method has its own prep steps. Fumigation means leaving the house, typically for two nights and three days, and no one goes back in until the licensed fumigator posts clearance. Formosan liquid treatment does not require you to leave. People and pets must stay clear of the work area while it is in progress, and off treated soil until the application has been watered in or has dried. You’ll also need to clear the foundation and mark buried lines. The agreement for each method lists its prep requirements.

  5. Treatment by a technician.

Depending on the method, this can mean attic treatment, spot injections, or radius treatment under a drywood bond. It can also mean whole-house tent fumigation, trenching and drilling for Formosan liquid treatment, or installing bait stations around the perimeter.

  6. Service under your contract.

With a baiting agreement, we inspect the installed bait stations at least once a year during the initial term and any optional renewal term you choose, and we service stations and bait as needed. Drywood bond, drywood fumigation, drywood spot treatment, and Formosan liquid treatment warranties are reactive. If you see activity during a covered term, contact us. Inspection and covered re-treatment are provided according to your specific agreement. Formosan fumigation has no warranty, so it comes with no warranty service after clearance.

What Termite Treatment Costs in Marco Island

Termite pricing depends on which termite you have and which method fits your home. We publish one starting figure, and it applies only to a one-year drywood termite bond on a smaller home.

Termite protection in Marco Island starts around $975 for a one-year drywood termite bond on a smaller home.

That figure does not apply to three-year bonds, spot treatment, drywood or Formosan fumigation, baiting systems, or Formosan liquid treatment. We quote each of those separately after the inspection. The main things that affect price are:

  • Termite species: drywood, subterranean, and Formosan termites each call for different services.
  • Method and scope: a localized spot treatment is priced differently from a whole-house tent or a treatment around the full perimeter.
  • Size and layout of the home: fumigation depends in part on the cubic footage and layout of the structure.
  • Term length: a one-year bond and a three-year bond are priced differently, and renewals are optional.

Every standard termite job starts with a free inspection and a written quote. An official WDO real-estate report for a home sale is a separate paid service, quoted on request.

Termite Service Coverage Across the City of Marco Island

We cover the whole city of Marco Island. It is the largest barrier island in Southwest Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands area, and it is part of Collier County. Coverage is based on your address, so there’s no list of qualifying subdivisions to check. If your home is within the city, we can schedule a free termite inspection there.

When you book, give us your street address and describe what you’ve noticed: pellets, wings, mud tubes, or damaged wood. Those details help us plan the visit and give the inspector a starting point once they arrive at your home.

Visits are scheduled through our West Coast branch in Naples, which also serves Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, and Cape Coral.

What On Demand Pest Control Customers Say

★★★★★

“Aiden was excellent! On his own initiative, he checked the wooden table and mirror by the front door where the dead termites had been found. He also checked another piece of wooden furniture that was nearby. He also found a new hole that the termites had made and was very thorough in treating the whole area. We are very pleased with his service and would highly recommend him to our friends.”

— A. Jones
★★★★★

“On Friday morning I saw what appeared to be droppings from drywood termites in my cabinet. I sent an online inquiry about a termite inspection. I received a call within 10 minutes, and by 130 that afternoon Bill came by to do a free inspection. Bill was knowledgeable, thorough, honest, and polite. He didn’t try to sell me something I didn’t need and provided a synopsis of possible treatments.”

— L. Shortt
★★★★★

“My neighbors used them and they came highly recommended. I called, they scheduled right away to come out, scheduled the tenting for termites right away, and scheduled the walk through appointment. Matthew Klein Senior inspector came out and is my rep now. He is very thorough, honest, and upfront. They do not add additional services just because, they listen to your needs, no games.”

Choosing a Termite Company for Your Marco Island Home

On Demand Pest Control has been in business since 2017. Here is what you get when you call us about termites:

  • Treatment matched to the species: seven separate termite services cover drywood, native subterranean, and Formosan termites. You only pay for the ones your home needs.
  • Written, method-specific contracts: each service states its term, renewal options, and transfer rules. Bonds, drywood fumigation, and Formosan liquid treatment can transfer to a new owner with written notice within thirty days of closing.
  • Regional coverage: Marco Island is served from our Naples branch, which covers Collier and Lee counties.
  • Clear scheduling: we respond the same day. New customers are typically scheduled within 24 hours, and same-day appointments depend on availability and preparation.

Termite Warranty Coverage: What Each Treatment Includes

Most of our termite services include covered re-treatment at no additional charge during the warranty term. What that term covers, and for how long, depends on the method. Each contract spells out its own warranty terms, including the covered termite group, the length of the term, renewal options, and transfer rules. Review the terms for the specific service in your quote before you sign, so you know what you’re buying.

  • Drywood termite bond: a one-year or three-year initial term, then optional one-year renewals. Covered drywood re-treatment is included during the term. Warranty visits happen when you report activity.
  • Drywood fumigation: a one-year term, renewable yearly.
  • Drywood spot treatment: covers only the specific treated areas, for sixty days. It cannot be renewed or transferred.
  • Subterranean baiting system: installation includes the first year of monitoring and station servicing. After that, you can choose to renew each year.
  • Formosan liquid treatment: a one-year renewable warranty. It covers further liquid treatment only and never includes fumigation.
  • Formosan fumigation: sold with no warranty and no included re-treatment. Any later work is quoted as a separate job.

None of these warranties pays for repairing wood damage, and each one covers only the termite group named in its contract. Renewals are optional, and coverage depends on the conditions written in your agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Is the termite inspection free on Marco Island?

Yes. The standard termite inspection is free and comes with a written quote. An official WDO real-estate report for buying or selling a home is a separate paid service, and we quote it on request.

Do I have to leave my house for termite treatment?

For fumigation, yes. The typical vacate period is two nights and three days, and it can run longer depending on weather and the structure. No one may go back in until the licensed fumigator has posted clearance. Formosan liquid treatment doesn't require you to leave. People and pets must stay clear of the work area, and off treated soil until the application has been watered in or has dried. Other methods have their own prep steps, which are listed in the agreement for that service.

How soon can someone come out to my Marco Island home?

We respond the same day. New customers are typically scheduled within 24 hours. Same-day appointments depend on availability and preparation.

Does a termite warranty pay to repair damaged wood?

No. Our termite warranties cover re-treatment or servicing under the terms of each contract, not wood repair. Formosan fumigation is sold with no warranty at all.

Can a baiting system treat drywood termites?

No. The baiting system targets subterranean termites, including Formosan termites, and does not cover drywood or above-ground infestations. Drywood termites are treated with a bond, spot treatment, or fumigation, depending on what the inspection finds.
